How Our Tests Work
Each test presents you with a passage of real, meaningful text drawn from a large library of original writing on topics ranging from nature and science to history and daily life. The timer starts the moment you press your first key, so there is no pressure before you are ready. You type each word and press the spacebar to move on. When time runs out, you receive a complete breakdown of your words per minute, your accuracy percentage, and a combined score that rewards the balance of speed and precision.
Every passage is chained from a bank of distinct texts, which means you can take the test as many times as you like without memorizing the words — each attempt is a genuine measure of your skill.

SpeedType is and always will be free to use. There is no login, no download, and no software to install — everything runs directly in your web browser on any device, whether that is a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet, or a phone.
