How WPM is Calculated

By industry convention, a "word" in typing tests equals 5 characters (including spaces). This standard lets fair comparisons across passages with different average word lengths.

Gross WPM

Gross WPM = (Total characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Counts every character you typed — correct or incorrect.

Net WPM

Net WPM = Gross WPM − (incorrect words ÷ minutes)
Penalizes errors so that speed without accuracy is not rewarded.

Example

If you typed 1,250 characters in 2 minutes with 5 incorrect words:
Gross = (1250 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 125 WPM
Net = 125 − (5 ÷ 2) = 122.5 WPM
